Understanding the EF Scale of Tornadoes

Tornadoes that reach violent ratings (EF4 or EF5) are capable of catastrophic damage. Houses are completely swept away, debris become killer projectiles, and the only true safe place to be is underground or in a reinforced shelter. If a tornado threatens you, remember to take shelter in the lowest point of your house (preferably a basement or storm shelter). The center of the house is better than outside walls. A rare and devastating EF-2 tornado touched down in Florida leaving a path of destruction in its wake. According to the National Weather Service, the twister had peak winds of 120 mph, and touched down at around 9:30 a.m. about 19 miles north of Orlando.
