When learning photography… leading lines is one of the best composition tools for creating amazing images. This photo is a little boring, even though I composed it perfectly. And the final image will be the difference between night and day. Before I reveal it, can you guess the primary composition technique used? If you said leading lines, you’re correct. There are multiple lines from the pier and the railing that all lead us to the star of the show, which is this structure at the end of the pie

Can you see what's wrong with this image? The answer reveals something important about how photography actually works in the field versus at home. Sometimes the conditions you're working with don't allow for perfect composition. You make choices based on what's in front of you, capture what matters most, and trust that you'll refine it later. When you learn photography through enough real situations, you start recognizing which problems need solving immediately and which ones can wait. The Heron

4 techniques for a perfect bird portrait This female red-winged blackbird portrait uses four specific composition techniques that work together to create a strong image. First: The color and quality of light Shot during golden hour at Point Pelee's marsh, about 30 minutes after sunrise. The soft, warm light wraps around the bird and creates that beautiful glow across the entire scene. Second: The Rule of Thirds The bird sits right on the top-right intersection point. This placement creates balan

If you came across this waterfall, would you photograph it horizontal or vertical? That one choice changes everything, and I'll show you exactly why. I was driving through West Virginia with my wife when we saw a sign for this waterfall and pulled over. The sun was setting fast, so I grabbed my camera and started photographing horizontally. I had the silky smooth water, the waterfall as the star, multiple layers with foreground interest and trees. But something felt wrong. When I looked beyond m

I almost kept both of these photos, but one had to go. Can you guess which one I deleted and why? Technically, both photos look good... sharp, clean, and easy to keep. But the second image stops you in your tracks. I woke up about an hour before sunrise while my family slept in and headed out to photograph burrowing owls. I already had my settings dialed in, so I could focus on the moment. I sat down on the ground to get a low, eye-level perspective and waited. Once the sun rose and gave me the

There’s one thing missing from this photo that would make it better. Can you see it? And it has nothing to do with the sky or the composition. Because I used three composition techniques to create this image. The first one is contrasting colors. The red rock against that deep blue sky adds instant visual energy. Opposite colors on the color wheel always create strong separation and help your subject pop. The second composition technique was using the remnants of this old tree trunk as a foregrou

This question is key to learning photography… Do you see the two problems with this photo? It's the same mistakes I see a lot of photographers make. The first problem is that our teeny, tiny hummingbird gets lost in all the distractions around it. Even though the background is blurred, it's not blurred enough. There's too much detail competing for attention, and it's hard for our eyes to stay on the humming bird when there's so much happening behind it. Plus, all the leaves on the right side are

This is not a very good photo, but I keep photos like this for one specific reason. Do you know why? And no, it's not because it's a good photo. Any other time I would delete images like this. In a moment I'll share when I create even worse images than this, but still keep them. So why is this a bad photo? Well, I did two things wrong, but I knocked one out of the park. We definitely know who the star of the photo is, which is this female red-winged blackbird with a beak full of bugs. That part

More sky doesn't make a better landscape photo. This proves it. I was visiting Pictured Rocks in Michigan, standing at the overlook built specifically to photograph Miners Castle. As I was setting up, the sky suddenly exploded with color. That's where everything started to unravel. I tried to force that dramatic sky into the composition. By doing that, I included too much sky and shrank the real subject. Miners Castle ended up teeny-tiny at the bottom of the frame, competing for attention instea

This is a bad photo with two major problems. Can you spot them? The first one becomes obvious once you see it. The second is more subtle, the kind of mistake that makes wildlife images feel flat and lifeless. Understanding both issues is essential when you learn photography composition in the field. The Unexpected Encounter Wildlife photography rarely goes according to plan. You work with what nature presents, adapt quickly, and hope the moment cooperates. On this particular day, I encountered a

Do you see the difference between these two photos? One is better than the other. But, why is that? Well, one has soft, elegant light that enhances the mood of the image and highlights the intricate details of the dragonfly. One has harsh, unflattering lighting. One is well composed and balanced, and there’s no distractions leading us away from the primary subject. One is badly composed, it’s off balance and has many distractions pulling away from the star of the show. So, this image is better,

Do you know why this photo is boring? There are three big reasons why this image just doesn’t work. And at the end, I’ll show you how a small shift made all the difference. The first problem is this huge area of dark brown foliage that fills up almost two thirds of the frame. It feels heavy, lifeless, and flat. The second issue is the sun… or at least, the starburst I was trying to create as it filtered through the clouds. It’s weak and undefined, and doesn’t really add much to the story. But th

I created 50 photos within seconds to get this one photo. That's not bad luck, that's the strategy. I was walking along the shores of Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks in Michigan, looking for a landscape composition. I couldn't find anything worth shooting… until I saw the perfect opportunity off in the distance. It was windy that day. The waves were peaking at least two to three feet high, and as they crashed into the shoreline, the water spray exploded skyward. I knew I wanted to capture that m

I nearly deleted this photo of a burrowing owl's first flight because it wasn't perfect straight out of camera. But that would've been a huge mistake. In this video, I'll show you why being prepared with the right camera settings (shutter speed, aperture, Auto ISO) matters for wildlife moments, and how strategic cropping in post-processing transformed an imperfect capture into a powerful image. Sometimes the decisive moment matters more than technical perfection, and knowing when to keep a photo
