On World Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour the culture, resilience, and contributions of Guyana’s indigenous people. Guyana has nine indigenous nations: Arawak, Akawaio, Arekuna, Carib, Makushi, Patamona, Wai Wai, Wapishana, and Warau. Locals call them the “shadow people,” isolated humans unconnected to civilization. It’s an eerie feeling trying to fly fish, knowing they might be watching. Earlier this year, we filmed the experience as it unfolded. I travelled to Guyana with cinematographer Jesse Males of Backwater Fly Fishing and my friend Sam Lungren to fish for payara, pacu, piranha, peacock bass, arowana, and massive arapaima exceeding 300 pounds.
