During the 1930s LNER and LMS were locked in a battle to operate the fastest services between London and Scotland with speed record attempts providing excellent publicity. On 3rd of July 1938 the LNER A4 locomotive ‘Mallard’ set the world speed record for a steam engine at 126 mph at Stoke Bank, south of Grantham, a record that stands to this day.
