Charley Pride was coming to terms with a flailing baseball career in the early 1960s, when he visited The Professional Club on Music Row and met Cowboy Jack Clement. In 1974, Charley Pride quietly stepped back onto a baseball diamond during spring training with the Texas Rangers. Before the hits and gold records, Pride was a real pro ballplayer—an early-1950s pitcher in the Negro Leagues and minors. The Rangers invited him to camp as a goodwill nod, and he still had the motion, the feel, and the respect of the game.
