Tesla’s board approved 96 million restricted shares, with a market value of nearly $30 billion, to CEO Elon Musk on Monday, calling it a demonstration of faith. As a condition to vest the shares, Musk has to continue serving as Tesla’s chief executive for at least two more years and cannot sell the stocks for five years.

Tesla Inc. approved an interim stock award of 96 million shares for Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk and said it would put a longer-term CEO compensation strategy ahead of a vote at the EV maker’s Nov.

The “interim” package announced on Monday was intended to help retain Elon Musk, whose previous pay plan was invalidated by a judge. The car maker’s chief has hinted that he needed a larger stake in the company.
