A rural southwestern Ontario community embroiled in a years-long tug-of-war over its potential to host the largest nuclear waste storage facility in Canada will walk away with $10-million and an answer to a divisive question.

A region in northern Ontario was chosen Thursday as the site to hold Canada’s nuclear waste in a deep geological repository, a critical milestone in a $26-billion, decades-long project to bury millions of used fuel bundles underground.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization announced Thursday it has chosen Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the township of Ignace as host communities for the country's first deep geological repository,

The facility is estimated to cost $26-billion and would store radioactive spent fuel from Canada’s nuclear power reactors

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization announced its decision, saying the people of Ignace and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation have demonstrated their willingness to move forward.
