The Michelin Guide ceremony in New York City on Monday saw Chicago add one Michelin starred restaurant to its repertoire.

Chicago has fewer restaurants with a star this year compared with last, but there is one new entry to the list. That new entry is Cariño, at 4662 N. Broadway in the Uptown neighborhood, located right south of where Broadway splits diagonally from Racine Avenue and passes under the CTA Red Line.

The Michelin Guide awarded its coveted stars during an awards ceremony Monday night in New York, and a number of Chicago restaurants garnered the prestigious honor. For the second year in a row, both Smyth — 177 North Ada Street in the West Loop — and Alinea — 1723 North Halsted Street in Lincoln Park

The prestigious Michelin Guide, which awards highly sought-after stars to restaurants in the U.S., released its 2024 Chicago guide, with a new restaurant earning a coveted spot as some restaurants moved down the list or fell off completely.

Chicago has gained a new Michelin-starred restaurant while four other restaurants lost stars, including two that recently closed.

In total, Chicago is now home to 19 restaurants with either one, two or three Michelin stars, down from 21 in 2023.

A year after it opened in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, Mexican restaurant Cariño is a Michelin starred restaurant for its “boldness and creativity.”

A second Israeli chef-run eatery, Galit, earned its first Michelin star in 2022 and has retained it as well. This year, Scott Stroemer, the sommelier of the Chicago-based restaurant operated by chef Zachary Engel, received the Michelin Sommelier Award.
