A land speed racer competing at Utah's Salt Flats died Aug. 3 while attempting a speed record, event organizers said.

Driver Chris Raschke lost control about two and a half miles into a run and was treated by medical professionals at the scene, but died from his injuries, according to a statement from the Southern California Timing Association, which has organized the popular land-speed racing event known as "Speed Week" since the late 1940s.

BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS, Utah — Chris Raschke, who was attempting to break a speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, has died. An investigation has been launched into what caused the vehicle that Raschke was piloting to go airborne, The Washington Post reported.
