Canada’s next leader is a relative political newcomer, coming instead from a decades-long career in finance where he steered governments through major global crises and periods of upheaval – experience he’s hoping to now leverage as he prepares to take over from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

After less than two months in politics, Mark Carney on Sunday was elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party. He will succeed Justin Trudeau as the country’s 24th prime minister.

Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, won in convincing fashion, securing 85.9% of the vote.
