Waymo announced plans Wednesday to bring its autonomous cars to New York City streets starting next month, but humans will be behind the steering wheel.

Waymo says it is bringing its autonomous cars to New York City streets starting in July. In a change from its robotaxi service in other states, the company says it plans to have a driver behind the steering wheel to meet local regulations.

Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, is seeking a permit to operate self-driving cars in Manhattan with a trained specialist behind the wheel. The current operation in New York City is a test phase, not yet serving customers, as fully autonomous operation without a driver is currently illegal in the state.
