CBS will end "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and retire "The Late Show" franchise in May 2026, the company announced Thursday.

Colbert followed “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart’s attack of the deal one week earlier. Stewart works for Comedy Central, also owned by Paramount, making the two comics the most visible internal critics of the $16 million settlement that was announced on July 1.

Stephen Colbert went off on his employer, Paramount, on Monday after the company decided to settle with President Trump in his lawsuit against the network.

The Writers Guild of America asked New York Attorney General Letitia James to investigate CBS’s decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, saying the network’s parent company may have given in to political pressure.

The Writers Guild of America called for Paramount to be investigated for bribery by the New York state attorney general following Thursday’s announcement that “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” has been canceled.
