FERNLEY — The first unaccompanied funeral service of the new year for veterans recognized 27 individuals Jan. 22 at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

Not every person whose name is on the Guelph cenotaph died in combat or as a result of wounds received in action. Some of them were killed in training accidents. Others were carried off by illness.

Ira “Ike” Schab passed away at age 105 last month and served as a musician in the U.S. Navy on the USS Dobbin.
