The Falcons announced the hiring of Jeff Ulbrich as their new defensive coordinator on Saturday night. The team interviewed seven candidates this week following the firing of defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake on Jan. 11 after Lake’s one season with the team.

Former New York Jets defensive coordinator and interim coach Jeff Ulbrich was hired by the Falcons for the role, the team announced Saturday. Ulbrich, 47, took over the Jets' top job after coach Robert Saleh was fired following a 2-3 start to the season.

Robert Saleh hired Ulbrich as the Jets’ defensive coordinator in 2021 after he was hired as head coach. Gang Green ranked last in yards and points allowed in Ulbrich’s first year as a full-time defensive play-caller. However, from 2022-23, the Jets finished in the top five in yards allowed under Ulbrich’s leadership.

It is a return to Atlanta for Ulbrich. He was the Falcons’ linebackers coach there from 2015-20, then interim defensive coordinator in 2020 after Dan Quinn was fired as head coach and current Falcons coach Raheem Morris was the interim coach.

Wilks, who replaces Jeff Ulbrich as the Jets’ defensive coordinator, also has head coaching experience. He was Arizona’s coach in 2018 and was fired after the Cardinals finished 3-13. Wilks also was Carolina’s interim coach when he replaced the fired Matt Rhule in 2022 and went 6-6 with the Panthers.

General manager Terry Fontenot suggested the Falcons could trade down at his end-of-the-year press conference. 2025 will be the first year that Fontenot doesn’t enter the draft with a top-10 pick.
