Did it move those icons to the "Unused Desktop Icons" or whatever folder? Or maybe it moved it to this folder, and then you deleted the folder and it fucked something up?

I cannot answer your questions on how to rename them. But to change the icons, you need to hack your shell32.dll or get an icon program like E-Icons or IconPackager from Stardock.
