Waymo said Wednesday it has applied for a permit to test its autonomous vehicles in New York City, the Alphabet company’s first step in a sticky regulatory process to bring its robotaxis to U.S.’s largest city.

Waymo is currently operating a robotaxi fleet of 1,500 vehicles in four markets: San Francisco and the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin. It plans on launching a commercial service in Atlanta later this year, as well as Miami and Washington, DC. The company has said it will add an additional 2,000 vehicles to its fleet through 2026.

Google-owned Waymo on Wednesday said it has applied for a permit to start testing its self-driving cars in New York City, a first for the Big Apple.

The latest rollout expands Waymo’s Bay Area service area by 80 square miles and is the company’s third major launch on the Peninsula since it began operating outside San Francisco last August, starting with Daly City, Broadmoor and Colma. It added service in parts of northern Santa Clara County in April.

The autonomous ride-hailing company Waymo will expand its service area in Los Angeles for the second time this year.

Waymo will expand into more areas of the San Francisco peninsula and parts of Silicon Valley, as the sole commercial robotaxi operator in the U.S. seeks to scale up operations, the Alphabet unit said on Tuesday.
