Shortstop Anthony Volpe hopes to return to the New York Yankees’ starting lineup for Monday’s series opener against San Diego after missing a 7-5 loss to Tampa Bay Volpe hurt his left shoulder on a dive trying to get to a grounder in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to the Rays.

Volpe, 24, enters Sunday hitting .233/.326/.442 (119 OPS+) with five home runs, 19 runs batted in, and four stolen bases (albeit on seven attempts). His contributions have been worth an estimated 1.5 Wins Above Replacement, according to Baseball Reference's calculations.

After the game, Volpe said that an X-ray on his shoulder came back clean. On Sunday, Aaron Boone added that an MRI also provided “good news.” The manager called Volpe “day-to-day” and said that he planned to do some hitting on Sunday.
