The United States and Mexico on Thursday reached an agreement aimed at finding a permanent solution to a decades-long sewage crisis, in which Mexican sewage has flowed into the Tijuana River and across the U.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin and his counterpart in Mexico, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, have signed a formal agreement to address and potentially solve the Tijuana River sewage crisis.

The United States and Mexico signed an agreement on Thursday to end the flow of raw sewage into the Tijuana River, which crosses the border into California and for years has contaminated and closed beaches and caused illnesses in both countries.
