PennDOT on Sunday temporarily reduced the speed limit to 45 mph on I-90 from I-79 to the New York line and on I-86 from the New York line to I-90.

Erie County is under a disaster emergency, the city has enacted a snow emergency and PennDOT has restrictions on parts of interstates, 79, 90 and 86.

Since it began early Friday morning, the lake effect storm has dumped several feet of snow in some areas. The snow fell at such an unrelenting pace that street crews have been unable to keep pace. Hundreds of holiday travelers were stranded on major highways Friday like i-90 and had to abandon their cars.

A lake-effect snow warning remains in place for Erie County through Tuesday, and a lot more snow could fall across Erie County by then.

A video shared from Erie, Pennsylvania, shows the aftermath of a lake-effect snowstorm that buried parts of the city under feet of snow. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed a disaster declaration and sent additional resources to the region to help with snow removal efforts.

While a lake-effect snow warning is in place for Erie County until Tuesday, the worst weather is likely Saturday, complicating Friday snowfall recovery.

Governor Josh Shapiro announced in an X post that he has activated the Pennsylvania National Guard to help residents stranded by Lake Effect Snow in Pennsylvania. According to WJET, residents of Erie County are waking up to their cars being buried in 1-3 feet of snow and closures of major highways and roads.

An intense lake effect is forecast through the rest of the weekend, causing as much as 1 to 2 feet of additional snow in some areas.
